Christmas chocolates
This year for Christmas I decided I wanted to make candy, in particular filled chocolates, for gifts. We made candy one year for Christmas for my grandparents, and I remembered having fun with it. Besides, ever since making the caramel sauce I'd been salivating over the idea of making my own salty caramel-filled chocolates. Most of the ones you buy from the store are really just dipped chewy caramels. They're good, but I prefer chocolates filled with soft caramel that oozes out when you bite into it.
Moogle Cupcakes!
Went to the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concert in Washington DC this past friday. It was an outdoor venue with picnic/eating allowed on the lawn so of course I had to make something!
The picture isn't great but it's a moogle cupcake.
Not really complicated enough to warrant a recipe but the ingredients are:
cupcake+frosting
starburst (cut in half, pink)
jumbo gum drop (red)
marshmallow (pink)
Black icing for eyes.
Chocolate sprinkles for whiskers.
Mario Cupcakes!
This probably dates me but I'd say the Nintendo (NES) was pretty much the most influential electronic item of my childhood. And for me, the most mind numbingly played game was Super Mario Brothers 3. It's easily 8+ hours of your life to just play it through continuously but it never worked like that. There were always interruptions even during summer vacation like 'lunch' or 'dinner' or 'clean your room' or 'you should go outside and play'. And in those hours away from the TV, you were still thinking about the game BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SAVE....
Pork Bone (Tonkotsu) Ramen
I was woefully ignorant on the realities of ramen before coming to graduate school. I honestly thought that when you asked for ramen, Oodles of Noodles and Top Ramen were what you'd get. So when Maki made "fresh" ramen (y'know, with non-dried noodles and a liquid broth concentrate) and then waxed eloquent about the stuff you can get in restaurants, it was a delicious, delicious revelation, as was the flavor - pork bone. Tucson not exactly being a destination for Japanese cuisine, there were no restaurants that served tonkotsu ramen.
Heaven and Hell Pig Cake
This past weekend Nicole and I made a cake for our friend's post-wedding ceremony bbq. The cake theme was "flying pigs" for reasons that have nothing to do with marzipan pigs being good luck in parts of europe. However, given the great love that some of us have for bacon and roast pig the project quickly devolved into two separate cakes.
